It’s no surprise that social media can harm our mental health. Every day, negative content floods our screens. People constantly compare themselves to photoshopped images, picture-perfect lives, and unrealistic standards.
Launching Our First Self Love Contest
At Limelight, we wanted to make a difference. We know we cannot change social media culture overnight, but we can offer a positive alternative. That desire inspired our very first Self Love Contest.
Through this initiative, we spread positivity directly to our social media community. Contestants—mainly dancers and gymnasts—posted on their own Instagram feeds. They nominated someone special in their lives who deserved a full day of pampering and self-love.
Reading all the heartwarming nominations brought so much joy to our team. Although we didn’t know the nominees personally, their stories brought big smiles to our faces.
A Day of Pampering in Port Hope
We invited our contest winners, Kiera and Riley, along with their mothers, to join us in Port Hope for a full day of pampering!
The day started with a quick tour of Limelight Headquarters in downtown Port Hope. Next, we walked over to Studio 100 for Kiera’s manicure and Riley’s pedicure. We spent over an hour at the studio taking photos and videos. Kiera joked that she felt famous with our marketing team acting as her personal paparazzi! That simple self-care session gave both girls a noticeable boost in confidence.
Afterward, the girls explored the shops in downtown Port Hope. We gave Kiera and Riley gift cards to The Nooks, where they found some amazing items. We also picked up special gifts for them at Tall Birches. Both girls loved their shopping spree!
Team Lunch and Photoshoot Fun
Next, we headed over to Trattoria Gusto for a team lunch on the riverfront patio. We put our cameras away so everyone could relax and connect. The bright afternoon sun kept us warm despite the cool temperature.
After lunch, we returned to Limelight Headquarters to unwind. Kiera and Riley were thrilled to explore our closet filled with Abby Lee Dance Company garments! We walked them through the collection and shared the stories behind each costume.
Finally, we headed to a local high school in nearby Cobourg for a photo shoot. The track’s vibrant colors and stair structures created a perfect backdrop. By then, Kiera and Riley felt completely comfortable and let their personalities shine. They came up with creative poses and even showed off a few acro tricks. We could have kept shooting all evening!
Why Spreading Positivity Matters
We didn’t realize how powerful this day would be until it happened. After two years of intermittent lockdowns, everyone appreciated the opportunity to build genuine, face-to-face connections. Both mothers shared how much their daughters needed this experience.
Because this event brought so much joy to everyone involved, we plan to host the Self Love Contest every year. In November 2021, we shared photos and videos from Kiera and Riley’s special day to keep the positive momentum going.
Spotlight on Community Kindness
The Self Love Contest is just one way we promote positive online spaces. We also host our monthly “Kindness Matters” challenge. This challenge highlights gymnasts and dancers who make an impact in their local communities.
For example, two recent winners—a pair of sisters—raised $1,000 for Children’s Mental Health!
Anyone in the dance and gymnastics community can nominate a deserving athlete by email. Every month, we select a winner and feature their story across our social media platforms. Highlighting these young leaders inspires others to perform acts of kindness in their own communities.
Inclusive Values and Global Giving
Our marketing team consistently promotes uplifting messages. As a size-inclusive brand, Limelight Teamwear designs athletic wear for every body type, gender, and size. We firmly believe that every body is made for movement.
Our mission extends globally through our charity in Medellin, Colombia, called Soul Dancers. This foundation provides local youth with English lessons, dance classes, and healthy meals. The weekend dance sessions give kids regular exercise, boosting their endorphins and overall quality of life. Our CEO visits Medellin every year to see this positive impact firsthand.
